Plot: Four months after the events of A Darker Shade of Magic, Red London finalizes preparations for the Element Games—an extravagant international competition of magic, meant to entertain and keep healthy the ties between neighboring countries—a certain pirate ship draws closer, carrying old friends back into port.

But while Red London is caught up in the pageantry and thrills of the Games, another London is coming back to life, and those who were thought to be forever gone have returned. After all, a shadow that was gone in the night reappears in the morning, and so it seems Black London has risen again—meaning that another London must fall.

I agosdidn’t really need to wait for this book with eager anticipation.

A Darker Shade of Magic had been sat on my shelf for a while, and finally, in the month of February, I gave it a read and fell in love. I found out that the next month, it’s sequel, A Gathering of Shadows would be released.

Come on, I had it MADE.

A Gathering of Shadows continues following the lives of Kell, an Antari (blood-magician) who lives in the magical Red London, and Lila Bard, a thief an adventurer from Grey London (our boring-ass London).

With more screen time for secondary characters and the introduction of new characters, I’d like to say that before we were given just a sliver, but now we’ve been given the whole damn cake. And it’s delicious chocolate fudge.

V.E. Schwab has easily already become one of my favourite authors, weaving descriptions of worlds like she could do it in her sleep. I’m mesmerized as I’m transported into the lives of multiple developed characters, all with lives that intertwine but stand out at the same time, making you laugh and cry in delight at how real they feel. At one point, I was sat alone in the staff room at work and had to put the book down to just squeal at nothing for a little while. You’ll know which part. When a book makes you do that, when a book makes you not stop thinking about it, you need to give it five stars, you just do.
