Anonymous Bookaholics

I came across Beth’s Anonymous Bookaholics post and, while I wasn’t tagged, I decided this was a tag I really wanted to get behind. I’d never heard of it, but instead of asking random questions people don’t care about, I actually found it quite relevant.

I am a bookaholic. Unrelentless. Unforgiving. Unapologetic.

What do you like about buying new books?

I wouldn’t necessarily say ‘new’, because I buy a lot of second hand and used books, but the love of buying books is sort of a mixture of being a consumerist and wanting to love something so much. I love buying things and, despite being the stingiest bitch I know, I do love a good book shopping spree.

I love buying books especially from places such a YALC, where I’m buying the book specifically from the publisher, who work tirelessly to get these stories out there. And, by proxy, I’m buying it directly from the author, who wrote these words and crafted this story so I can love it.

But also it’s an exciting new adventure. It’s exciting to know I have a new world, a new life, waiting on my shelf.

How often do you buy new books?

I am very lucky (and so sort of unlucky) that I have a full time job, yet still live at home. I pay rent, and have other bills, but I also earn enough that I can buy books whenever I want. Sometimes though it can ruin the joy of it, because it doesn’t seem special anymore.

Bookstore or online book shopping?

This really depends on the situation. I love online book shopping because they’re cheaper, and because I can find older, rarer editions that I prefer. It also means I can find books that they may not sell in my local bookstore.

That being said, local bookstores are in a difficult situation, and they can’t price match online because of the costs to actually run the store. I’m all for supporting local bookshops, but when you’re given the option to buy a paperback for 1p online as opposed to 7.99 in a bookstore, there really is no question. I hope, when I’m in a better situation (living alone with a good job), I’ll force myself to bite the bullet and just shop at the store that can’t afford to have sales.

Do you pre-order books?

Of course! I have to be seriously into the book, though. I have auto-buy authors (V.E. Schwab, Leigh Bardugo, Jandy Nelson) and I’ll always pre-order their books, especially if they’re hardbacks/signed/sprayed edges etc. I’ll also pre-order if I’ve known about the book for a while and maybe even if I’ve read an e-arc of it e.g. Nevernight by Jay Kristoff.

Do you have a monthly book buying limit?

Definitely. Like I said, I’m a super stingey person, so I’m very careful with money. That being said, I’m the least careful when it comes to books. I usually stop when I find myself buying books for the sake of buying them and not because I actually want them. I also stop if my TBR is so big that it’s pointless buying anything because I know I won’t be getting round to it soon.

Book buying bans – Are they something for you?

Sort of the same answer as before. I’ll stop myself when I’m only buying the book because I want to buy something and not because I actually want to read it. I really have to stop when I see a book I already own in a store and think about buying it!

Why Hollie? Why do you need a book you already own??

How big is your wishlist?

Not very big, unfortunately. It used to be on Amazon, but I’d forget to put stuff on there. I now have one in my head instead, but once it goes on there, I go buy/borrow it.

Which three books from your wishlist do you wish to own NOW?

A Conjuring of Light by V.E. Schwab

Oh my God. This series is one of my favourites of all time. It’s so vibrant and funny and imaginative. I don’t want it to end, but when it does, I’ll be holding it, crying in the corner.

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

I love everything Leigh Bardugo writes. I loved The Grisha Trilogy, and recieved an ARC of Six of Crows through work and absolutely adored it. I bought Six of Crows in hardback, got it signed, and I plan to do the very same with Crooked Kingdom.

Windwitch by Susan Dennard

I only gave Truthwitch four stars because I felt that something was missing, but I did really enjoy it, and I love the world that was created. And so, despite not being absolutely in love with Truthwitch, I am looking forward to Windwitch and seeing more of what this world holds.

I’m not going to tag anyone specifically, but if you’re interested in doing this tag then please do! I love reading about people’s reading habits and how books make them happy!

My wish list is hella big, too. It kills me because I forget about books on the list!

I love this tag, but I think it should start off with, hello I’m >insert name< and I'm addicted to books… I've never pre-ordered a book, but I'm sure when the occasion arises, that is something I'll do!

I like it, but I didn’t really want to parody AA too much :/ It’s a weird thing, like it’s great when the book gets to you, but you have to pay money to wait for a while and that sucks haha!

Ohh, I’m so glad to see you decided to take part in this tag. I loved reading all your answers as well. It seems like you’re a lot better at control you’re spending and your wishlist than I am. It’s something I need to learn how to do because I tend to get in the stage of buying books just for the sake of buying them.
But I do have auto-buy authors like you (V.E. Schwab, Leigh Bardugo and Jandy Nelson are on mine as well) but my list is a lot longer. And all the books you picked would be on my list as well. I can’t wait to get my hands on A Conjuring of Light especially! 😀

I always think that I’m not good at controlling myself but compared to other people, I definitely am! YES! I am so ready for ACOL but at the same time I don’t want the trilogy to end!

Having so much self-control is something I really admire of, especially it’s about buying books. Haha.
