New York Times By The Book Tag
Thank you so much to Liv at Liv’s Wonderful Escape for tagging me! I haven’t done a tag in a long time, but I think it’s time to stick one in since my blog is lacking in some personal bookish questions. Ha.
What book is on your nightstand right now?
Look, it’s still Three Dark Crowns by Kendare Blake. I’m almost done, but this reading slump is so draining, and I have to force myself to pick up a book. I don’t know if it is the book or something else but…yeah.
What was the last truly great book that you read?
The last 5 stars I gave out was for the princess saves herself in this one by Amanda Lovelace. It’s a poetry book, but the poems as a whole tell a truly heart breaking and empowering story. Took about 40 minutes to read and I cried the whole time.
If you could meet any writer – dead or alive – who would it be? And what would you want to know?
I’ve met quite a few of my favourite authors, and I’m gonna get super real here. I like going to talks and hearing them speak about their books and the industry. I like having my book signed. But when it comes to meeting them? I don’t know. I’m not a big fan of queuing up to meet another human briefly to shower them with praise and leave again. I guess, maybe in this context we’re talking about having a proper conversation with them? Then maybe, but from what I’ve experienced…I find meeting them uncomfortable.
But to answer your question; F. Scott Fitzgerald, and we’d party in 1920s Paris.
What books might we be surprised to find on your shelves?
I’m not a very surprising person! Maybe the fact that I have hardbacks of Sarah J. Maas’ books? I rarely talk about her books and I usually give them average ratings. I don’t know. I ask for them for birthdays/Christmas because they’re pretty, but I read about 100 pages of Queen of Shadows and got bored. So really, I shouldn’t own them.
How do you organize your personal library?
I don’t! If books are by the same author, I put them together, but other than that it’s just PURE CHAOS.
What book have you always meant to read and haven’t gotten around to yet? Anything you feel embarrassed never to have read?
Classics. I’m really bad at reading classics, just because I’m intimidated by the size and the language. Despite studying English throughout school, sixth form, and university, I still sometimes can’t get my head around it. There are some classics that I’ve read and actually understood, but there’s some where I’m just like ???
Disappointing, overrated, just not good: what book did you feel you were supposed to like but didn’t? Do you remember the last book you put down without finishing?
Red Rising by Pierce Brown is one that I’m always confused that people enjoy. Booktubers won’t shut up about it, and Pierce Brown is sometimes hailed as a good writer because he’s good looking (???). I read 100 pages and the story just reeked with misogyny. I was told that later on there is a ‘kick-ass female character’ but really, that doesn’t make a book not awful to women, does it? It’s just another trope that male writers use to make it look like they can write women well.
But…umm…I’m sure it’s great.
What kinds of stories are you drawn to? Any you stay clear of?
It depends! If a book has LGBTQ+ rep, I’ll most definitely pick it up. I’ve also really gotten into high fantasy, which was usually a genre I wasn’t too bothered about. There are some beautifully written contemporaries out there that I need more of (and often can’t find). I usually stay clear of mainstream fiction…the kind of stuff that is advertised to the masses on all the ‘general fiction’ tables. I know that’s not good, but the blurbs always sound so boring and seemed to be written so literally anyone can OK it.
If you could require the president to read one book, what would it be?
Of The United States?
I haven’t even read this book, but probably The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas. I feel the whole of America is going to need this book.
What do you plan to read next?
No idea! Like I said, bad reading slump. But, I have a lot of high fantasies on my shelf so hopefully I’ll devour one of those!
