What If It’s Us By Becky Albertalli & Adam Silvera
Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera are two of my favourite contemporary writers.
They both produce 5 star novels that can either make you laugh or cry. Sometimes you’re doing both. Sometimes you’ve got the giggles while tears of sadness are streaming down your face. I love not knowing what my emotions are doing, and Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera love screwing with them.
Cute romances. Serious issues. High school. Friendships.
Love that stuff? Pick up at least one of their books.
Once you’ve fallen in love with each author’s own style of writing. Come back to What If It’s Us; a fusion of both styles and contemporary goodness.
Told from two perspectives, it’s pretty obvious who is writing which character’s POV. But at the same time, it doesn’t feel like you’re stepping in and out of two different stories. It’s something I always worry about with collaborations; that I can see the breaks and differences in narrative and ‘feel’ of the story. But What If It’s Us has none of that, and flows perfectly as a succinct novel. Of course it does! Adam Silvera and Becky Albertalli are contemporary powerhouses!
I liked how different the romance was too. I, as I’m sure most do, love a romance plot. And, unpopular opinion, I do love insta-love when it’s done right. There are many ways you can get a love at first sight plot wrong and, while they seem unrealistic, I love reading about them! But this romance was different. It wasn’t a slow burn; you weren’t waiting around for our boys to get together. But it wasn’t love at first sight either. It’s actually pretty one-sided, with one character going all in too soon and the other just not feeling it. And it happens! But it’s rarely a romance people read about because it can come off as sad.
But actually, it was a great, realistic representation about the unsure feelings you may or may not having when starting a relationship with someone you barely know.
Not everyone is friends first, and I loved that the universe put these two boys together and they figured it out in a very realistic and super sweet way. Yay for romance!
On 11th October I’m also taking part in the What If It’s Us International Blog Tour, where I’ll be making a lil’ something related to the book for you to enjoy so keep an eye out for that!
